How do I get rid of ants in my NYC apartment or home?
Why baiting beats spraying for ants — and how to stop them coming back in New York City.
Quick answer: The reliable way to get rid of ants is to identify the species and use bait the workers carry back to the colony, while sealing entry points and removing food and moisture — not spraying the trail, which kills foragers but leaves the colony intact. New York Exterminating offers ant control across NYC.
Why spraying the trail backfires
Spraying visible ants kills the foragers you see but does nothing to the queen and colony — and some species “bud” into multiple colonies when disturbed by repellent sprays, making it worse. The fix is species-appropriate bait that workers carry home, plus exclusion and sanitation, consistent with EPA IPM guidance.
Common NYC ants
Pavement ants, odorous house ants, carpenter ants, and pharaoh ants are the usual NYC suspects — and they need different baits. Carpenter ants in particular can signal a moisture/wood issue worth inspecting.

Ant control FAQ
Why are there suddenly ants in my kitchen?
Usually a food or moisture source plus an entry point. Foragers lay trails others follow — baiting interrupts the colony, cleaning and sealing prevent return.
Should I spray ants I see?
No — over-the-counter sprays kill foragers but can scatter some species into more colonies. Baiting is more effective.
Are carpenter ants dangerous to my home?
They nest in damp/damaged wood and can indicate a moisture problem; an inspection is worthwhile.
