Here’s what most people don’t realize: “mites” covers dozens of different species, and what works for bird mites won’t touch clover mites. Spraying random pesticides usually makes things worse because you’re not addressing where they’re actually coming from.

Clover Mites (Bryobia praetiosa)
What they look like: Tiny reddish-brown dots, smaller than a pinhead. Leave red smears when crushed. Often mistaken for “baby spiders.”
Where they come from: Lawns, gardens, and plants right outside your building. They migrate inside in huge numbers during spring and fall, especially after rain or lawn fertilization. They love sunny sides of buildings.
The problem: They don’t bite, but thousands swarming across windowsills, walls, and furniture is disturbing. They’re attracted to well-fertilized lawns and ivy-covered walls. Crushing them leaves permanent red stains on surfaces.
Bird Mites (Ornithonyssus species)
What they look like: Nearly invisible to the naked eye, translucent to grayish, about the size of a period. Turn reddish after feeding on blood.
Where they come from: Bird nests—pigeons, sparrows, starlings nesting in AC units, roof eaves, window ledges, or ventilation openings. When baby birds leave the nest or birds die, mites come inside looking for new hosts.
The problem: They bite humans, causing itchy welts and rashes. People often think they have bed bugs. Activity peaks in late spring and summer when birds are nesting. You’ll get bitten repeatedly until the source nest is removed and treated.
Rodent Mites (from rats and mice)
What they look like: Similar to bird mites—microscopic, fast-moving, barely visible without magnification.
Where they come from: Rats or mice nesting in walls, ceilings, or voids. When rodents die or abandon nests after extermination, mites migrate out searching for blood meals.
The problem: They bite humans aggressively. You’ll notice bites appearing after rodent control work was done. The mites are escaping dead or removed rodent nests. Standard rodent treatment doesn’t address mite populations left behind.
Dust Mites (Dermatophagoides species)
What they look like: Microscopic—you can’t see individual dust mites without a microscope. They live in mattresses, pillows, upholstered furniture, and carpets.
Where they live: Feeding on dead skin cells humans shed constantly. They thrive in humid environments—bedrooms, especially in summer without air conditioning.
The problem: They don’t bite, but their fecal matter and body fragments trigger allergies and asthma. If you’re waking up congested, sneezing, or with skin irritation, dust mites might be the culprit. No amount of pesticide eliminates them—requires environmental management.
Building age and wildlife access – Older buildings have gaps around window AC units, damaged roof eaves, uncapped chimneys, and ventilation openings. Birds nest in these spots constantly. Pigeons especially love NYC buildings.
Urban wildlife density – Pigeons, sparrows, and starlings nest on virtually every building. Rats and mice are everywhere. When these hosts are present, mites follow.
Landscaping against buildings – Foundation plantings, ivy on walls, mulch beds right against buildings—these create perfect conditions for clover mites to build massive populations, then migrate inside.
Climate and seasonal patterns – Spring and fall temperature changes drive clover mites indoors. Summer heat increases bird nesting activity and dust mite populations. Buildings without proper sealing can’t keep them out.
Post-extermination migration – Successfully eliminating rodents sometimes creates mite problems. The mites abandon dead hosts and come out of walls looking for new blood sources—your family.
Step 1: Identification & Source Location
We determine which mite species you’re dealing with because treatment is completely different for each type. We locate the source—bird nests, rodent activity, exterior plantings, entry points. We assess infestation severity and explain what’s causing the problem.
Step 2: Source Removal (When Applicable)
Bird nests: Removed from AC units, ledges, eaves, vents (after nesting season when legal)
Rodent nests: Eliminated through integrated rodent control program
Exterior vegetation: Trimmed back from building, treated if harboring clover mites
You can’t just kill the mites—if the source remains, they keep coming.

Step 4: Exclusion & Prevention
Seal gaps around windows, doors, AC units, and utility penetrations. Install or repair screens on vents and openings. Address moisture issues that attract mites. Create vegetation-free zones around building perimeter.
Step 5: Follow-Up Monitoring
Bird and rodent mites require follow-up visits 1-2 weeks after initial treatment to catch newly hatched mites. Clover mites typically need one treatment with potential follow-up during peak migration seasons. We monitor results and adjust if needed.
Clover Mites: Activity stops within 3-5 days of treatment. Seasonal migrations may require retreatment in spring/fall.
Bird Mites: Visible improvement in 1-2 weeks after nest removal and treatment. Complete elimination takes 3-4 weeks as all life stages die off.
Rodent Mites: Similar timeline to bird mites—2-4 weeks for complete elimination after source removal.
Dust Mites: Environmental changes show results in 2-3 weeks. Ongoing maintenance required—not a one-time fix.

Wrong identification – People treat for bed bugs when they have bird mites. They spray for insects when dealing with clover mites. Wrong pest means wrong treatment and wasted money.
Missing the source – Killing visible mites doesn’t stop the problem. If the bird nest stays, mites keep coming. If the lawn conditions remain, clover mites return next season.
Ineffective products – Consumer sprays don’t reach mite harborages. Dust mites can’t be controlled with pesticides at all. Over-the-counter products aren’t formulated for mite biology.
Making it worse – Bug bombs and foggers don’t penetrate where mites hide. They contaminate living spaces without solving the problem. Harsh chemicals can trigger allergic reactions worse than the mites themselves.
