Stored Product Pest Control in NYC

When moths are flying in the rafters of a warehouse or beetles turn up in a customer’s bag of product, you have a stored-product pest problem — and the cost is measured in condemned inventory, failed audits, and supplier claims, not just nuisance. New York Exterminating runs monitoring-driven programs for food distributors, importers, co-packers, specialty-food storage, and processing facilities across the NYC metro. Our work is led by an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) trained on the full range of stored-product species and licensed in food-establishment pest control.

Moths or beetles? The species tells us where it came from.

Stored-product pests fall into two families, and the difference drives the whole investigation. Stored-product moths — chiefly the Indianmeal moth — leave telltale silken webbing in product and fly in the upper warehouse; the damage is done by the larvae webbing grain, flour, nuts, and dried goods together. Stored-product beetles — sawtoothed grain, cigarette, drugstore, and warehouse beetles — leave no webbing, bore directly through packaging, and crawl in and around the commodity. Each species points to a likely source commodity and entry route, which is why we identify before we treat. A flying moth and a boring beetle are not the same problem.

We find the source lot — we do not just spray the room

The defining feature of stored-product work is that the infestation lives inside a specific product, not on the floor. The professional method is species-specific pheromone monitoring: we place traps that attract the target species, read where activity concentrates over time, and use that map to find the infested pallets, spilled product in racking dead spots, and forgotten stock. Then we isolate and remove the source. Broadcast spraying a warehouse kills visible adults and changes nothing, because the next generation is already developing inside the product.

Stored-product pests in NYC food businesses

New York’s dense food-distribution economy — importers, ethnic and specialty food warehouses, bakeries, co-packers, and restaurant commissaries — moves enormous volumes of dry goods through tight urban storage, often in older multi-tenant buildings. That combination (high product turnover, shared walls, limited storage, and constant inbound deliveries) is exactly what stored-product pests exploit. Many infestations arrive inside sealed inbound product, which is why receiving inspection matters as much as anything we do inside the facility.

Our program

1. Assessment & identification. We identify the species, walk the storage and receiving flow, and find the conducive conditions and dead spots.

2. Pheromone monitoring. Species-specific traps map activity and pinpoint the source lots over time.

3. Source removal & sanitation. We isolate infested stock, address spillage and harborage, and recommend stock-rotation and receiving controls.

4. Documentation. Audit- and DOH-ready records, trend data, and corrective-action logs from every visit.

Stored Product Pest FAQs

How do I find the source of stored-product pests in a warehouse?

You trace it, you do not chase it. The adults you see flying are the symptom; the infestation lives inside a specific product lot. We deploy species-specific pheromone monitors to map where the activity concentrates, then inspect the implicated pallets, spillage, and dead spots in the racking. Finding and removing the source lot is what actually ends it — spraying the room never does.

What is the difference between stored-product moths and beetles in my product?

Both infest dry goods, but they behave differently. Indianmeal moths leave silken webbing and you see the moths flying in the upper warehouse; the larvae web product together. Beetles — sawtoothed grain, cigarette, drugstore, warehouse beetles — leave no webbing, bore through packaging, and the adults crawl in and around the product. The species tells us the likely commodity and how it got in, so identification is the first step, not an afterthought.

Will I have to discard product?

Only what is actually infested, and identifying that precisely is the point of monitoring. A targeted approach isolates and removes the affected lots rather than condemning a whole aisle. We help you separate salvageable stock from infested stock and document it for your records and any supplier claim.

Can stored-product pests come in with a delivery?

Constantly — it is the most common entry route. Many infestations arrive inside sealed product from a supplier or during transit, then spread to your own stock. That is why we build receiving inspection and pheromone monitoring into the program: catching an infested inbound pallet at the dock prevents a facility-wide problem.

Do you provide documentation for audits and inspections?

Yes. Food distribution and processing accounts face third-party audits (AIB, SQF, BRC) and DOH inspection. We document every visit, maintain trend data from the monitoring program, and provide the records and corrective-action logs auditors and inspectors expect.

How is stored-product pest control different from a regular pest service?

It is monitoring-driven and commodity-focused rather than perimeter spraying. The work centers on pheromone trapping, lot inspection, sanitation of spillage and dead spots, stock rotation, and receiving control — an Integrated Pest Management program designed around how product moves through your facility, not a baseboard treatment.
