Trusted extermination services to keep your home, business, and customers pest-free

Spotted a silvery, fish-like bug darting across your bathroom floor? Found damaged books with irregular holes? Noticing mysterious damage to clothing or wallpaper? Those are silverfish, and they’re more than just creepy—they’re actively destroying your belongings.
Here’s the problem most people don’t realize: Silverfish infestations take months to develop before you notice them. By the time you’re seeing silverfish regularly, you have an established breeding population hiding in wall voids, under flooring, and behind baseboards. A few visible bugs means hundreds you’re not seeing.
We’ve been eliminating silverfish from NYC homes since 2010. We treat harborage areas, eliminate populations, and address conditions allowing them to thrive.

Common Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina)
What they look like: ½ to ¾ inch long, carrot-shaped body covered in silvery-gray scales, three long tail-like appendages, two long antennae. Move in rapid, fish-like wiggling motion. Wingless insects.
Where they live: Dark, damp areas with high humidity—bathrooms, basements, attics, kitchens, behind baseboards, in wall voids, under sinks, in storage boxes. They’re nocturnal and light-sensitive, so you mainly see them when you turn on lights suddenly at night.
What they eat: Carbohydrates and proteins found in starchy materials—book bindings, paper, photographs, wallpaper, fabric sizing, cotton, linen, silk, cardboard, plaster, dried goods in pantries, dead insects. They can survive months without food.
Life cycle: Slow-developing insects. They molt throughout their lives (up to 40+ times), taking 3-4 months to reach maturity. Adults live 2-8 years, continuously reproducing. Females lay 2-20 eggs at a time in cracks and crevices. Development slows in cooler temperatures but never fully stops in heated NYC buildings.
The damage: Irregular holes in books and paper, yellowing of materials, surface scratching on fabrics and wallpaper, contamination of stored food items, damage to valuable documents and photographs.
Firebrats (Thermobia domestica) – Often Confused with Silverfish
What they look like: Similar to silverfish but mottled brown instead of silver, prefer much warmer temperatures (90-100°F).
Where they live: Near furnaces, boilers, heating pipes, ovens, dryers—anywhere consistently hot. Less common than silverfish but present in buildings with very warm mechanical areas.
Abundant moisture in older buildings – Silverfish need 75-95% humidity to thrive. Damp basements, bathroom condensation, plumbing leaks, poor ventilation, foundation moisture—NYC’s older buildings provide ideal conditions year-round.
Heated buildings maintain ideal temperatures – Silverfish are active year-round in heated structures. They breed continuously at 72-81°F—the temperature most people maintain their homes. There’s no winter die-off or seasonal slowdown.
Endless food sources in buildings – Books, papers, cardboard boxes, natural-fiber textiles, wallpaper paste, book bindings, photographs, dried pantry goods—homes contain countless food sources. Silverfish can feed on dust and dead insects if preferred foods aren’t available.
Abundant harborage sites – Wall voids, subfloor spaces, behind baseboards, in attic insulation, under bathtubs, inside cabinet voids, behind bookcases—buildings offer countless protected breeding sites where silverfish hide during the day.
Shared walls spread infestations – In multi-unit buildings, silverfish travel through wall voids, utility chases, and plumbing penetrations. Your neighbor’s infestation becomes your problem. Treatment requires building-wide coordination for complete control.
Storage areas create perfect habitat – Basements and storage rooms with boxes of papers, books, old clothing, and fabrics provide food, shelter, and darkness. People often don’t disturb these areas for months or years, allowing populations to explode.
Delayed detection enables establishment – Silverfish are extremely secretive. Infestations develop for 6-12 months before people notice activity. By detection time, populations are well-established throughout the structure.
Step 1: Comprehensive Inspection & Assessment
We inspect all areas where silverfish hide and breed:
We identify moisture sources, assess infestation severity, locate harborage areas, and determine factors allowing silverfish to thrive.
Step 2: Moisture Source Identification
Silverfish can’t survive in dry environments. We identify moisture problems:
Moisture control is critical to long-term elimination. We provide specific recommendations.
Step 3: Targeted Treatment Application
Multiple treatment methods for comprehensive control:
Crack-and-crevice applications:
Dust applications:
Residual applications:
Bait placements:
Step 4: Sanitation & Harborage Reduction
We provide specific guidance:
Step 5: Environmental Modifications
Long-term control requires changing conditions:
Step 6: Follow-Up Treatment & Monitoring
Initial treatment knocks down active populations. Follow-up treatment 2-3 weeks later catches newly hatched nymphs before they can reproduce. Silverfish have slow development—complete elimination takes 6-8 weeks as all life stages are affected.
Week 1-2: Immediate reduction in visible silverfish activity. Treated insects die or become lethargic.
Week 3-4: Continuing decline as remaining populations contact treatment. Some activity may persist from protected harborage areas.
Week 5-8: Near-zero activity as remaining eggs hatch and nymphs contact treatment before maturity.
Ongoing: Silverfish can reinfest from neighboring units or external sources if conditions remain favorable. Moisture control and periodic monitoring prevent reestablishment.
Complete elimination in multi-unit buildings requires treating all affected units. If neighbors have untreated infestations, silverfish will migrate back over time.

If you’re seeing silverfish regularly or finding damaged items, you have an established infestation requiring professional treatment.
We treat where silverfish actually live – Store-bought sprays only kill exposed individuals. Silverfish hide in wall voids, subfloor spaces, and behind baseboards where surface sprays don’t reach. We treat actual harborage areas.
We use multiple treatment methods – Complete silverfish control requires crack-and-crevice applications, void treatments, residual applications, and baits. No single method eliminates established populations.
We identify all moisture sources – DIY treatments fail when moisture problems continue attracting and sustaining silverfish. We diagnose moisture issues specifically and provide actionable recommendations.
Professional products are more effective – Commercial-grade formulations last longer, work better in humid conditions, and target silverfish biology specifically. Consumer products aren’t designed for serious infestations.
We locate hidden harborages – People treat visible areas and miss primary breeding sites. We inspect thoroughly and treat everywhere silverfish hide—including areas homeowners don’t access.
Follow-up timing is critical – Silverfish eggs aren’t affected by treatment. Proper timing of follow-up applications catches nymphs before sexual maturity, breaking the breeding cycle.
Control moisture ruthlessly:
Eliminate food sources:
Reduce harborage areas:
Regular cleaning:
Ongoing monitoring:
Look, silverfish might seem harmless compared to roaches or rodents, but they’re silently destroying your belongings—books, photographs, important documents, clothing. The damage is permanent and gets worse the longer you wait.
We’ll eliminate the infestation completely, treat all harborage areas, and show you exactly what needs changing to prevent them from coming back.
