Trusted extermination services to keep your home, business, and customers pest-free
Getting the animals out is only half the job — the insulation they nested and urinated in is a lingering health hazard, an odor source, and a hit to your energy bill. New York Exterminating removes contaminated insulation, decontaminates and deodorizes the space, treats the parasites left behind, and re-insulates, restoring the attic to a clean, sealed, efficient condition. The work is led by an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) licensed in structural pest control, so the pest side and the restoration side are handled together.
People often assume that once the mice or wildlife are gone, the attic is fine. It is not. Insulation soaked with droppings and urine can carry pathogens — hantavirus, salmonella, leptospirosis — and the accumulated urine off-gasses ammonia that irritates the airways, while the abandoned nests harbor mites and fleas seeking a new host. Your HVAC system can pull that contaminated dust down into your living space. And practically speaking, soiled insulation has lost much of its R-value, so it is costing you on heating and cooling. You cannot disinfect insulation that has been nested in — the saturated material has to be removed, not just surface-cleaned.
The sequence is what separates a real restoration from a temporary cleanup. We confirm the infestation is eliminated and every entry point is sealed before we re-insulate, because installing fresh insulation in an attic animals can still enter simply hands them new nesting material. In NYC’s housing stock — row houses and brownstones with shared rooflines, cornices, and soffit gaps — the entry points are often subtle and a few units over, which is why we inspect the full roofline as part of the project. (For the removal and exclusion side, see our Wildlife Removal and Pest-Proofing services.)
1. Confirm & seal. We verify the animals are out and the entry points are sealed before any restoration begins.
2. Remove. We remove the contaminated insulation and nesting debris and vacuum droppings.
3. Decontaminate. We disinfect and deodorize the cavity and treat for the mites and fleas left behind.
4. Re-insulate. We restore proper R-value, returning the attic to a hygienic, energy-efficient condition.

Yes — removing the saturated material plus disinfecting and deodorizing eliminates the odor at its source.
Yes — exclusion is done before re-insulation so animals cannot return to the fresh material.
Because rodent droppings and urine soaked into insulation can carry pathogens — including hantavirus, salmonella, and leptospirosis — and the accumulated urine off-gasses ammonia that irritates the airways. The nests also harbor mites, fleas, and other parasites looking for a new host. On top of the health risk, your HVAC can pull contaminated air and dust from the attic into your living space. Cleaning the surface is not enough; the saturated material has to be removed.
If it is soiled with droppings and urine, it needs to be removed and replaced — you cannot disinfect insulation that pests have nested and urinated in, and contaminated insulation also loses much of its R-value, costing you on heating and cooling. We remove the affected material, decontaminate the cavity, and re-insulate, restoring both the hygiene and the energy performance of the attic.
A full sequence: confirm the animals are out and the entry points are sealed, remove the contaminated insulation and nesting debris, vacuum and clean droppings, disinfect and deodorize the space, treat for the parasites left behind, and then re-insulate to proper R-value. The result is an attic that is hygienic, sealed, and energy-efficient again — not just emptied.
Yes — that is a core part of the job. Removing the saturated insulation and nesting material eliminates the source of the odor, and we disinfect and deodorize the cavity to neutralize what remains. Surface cleaning alone leaves the smell because it is coming from material soaked through; removing that material is what actually clears it.
Both — and the order matters. We make sure the infestation is eliminated and the entry points are sealed before restoration, because re-insulating an attic that pests can still enter just gives them fresh nesting material. We pair removal, exclusion, decontamination, and re-insulation into one complete project.
Common signs are a persistent musky or ammonia smell, visible droppings or trails in the insulation, scratching or scurrying overhead, stained or matted insulation, and a rodent or wildlife problem you have recently dealt with. If you have had animals in the attic, the insulation almost certainly needs assessment — we inspect and tell you honestly what is required.
