Quick answer

Most pests enter through predictable gaps — around pipes, vents, door sweeps, foundation cracks, and utility lines. New York Exterminating inspects the structure, seals these entry points with durable materials, and pest-proofs vulnerable areas so rodents and insects can’t get inside in the first place. Exclusion is the most lasting form of pest control, and our work is dependable, with a free assessment.

Pest-Proofing & Exclusion in NYC

The most permanent pest control is not a spray — it is sealing the building so pests cannot get in. New York Exterminating finds and closes the gaps, cracks, and penetrations that mice, rats, and insects use to enter your home, turning the structure itself into the barrier. The work is led by an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) licensed in structural pest control, who knows exactly where NYC buildings leak pests and how to close them for good.

Exclusion vs. spraying: fix the pipe, do not just mop the floor

This is the core idea, and it changes how you should think about pest control. Spraying deals with pests that are already in or on the building — useful, but temporary, because the access stays open and the next ones walk in. Exclusion physically seals the entry points, so pests cannot get inside in the first place. It is the difference between mopping up a leak and fixing the pipe. Exclusion is the backbone of real Integrated Pest Management precisely because it is the only step that produces a lasting result — everything else manages symptoms, while sealing the building addresses the cause.

The gaps that matter — and why NYC buildings leak pests

The openings that let pests in are small and easy to overlook. A mouse needs a gap about the size of a dime; a rat, the size of a quarter. The recurring NYC entry points are door gaps and worn sweeps, foundation and sidewalk-vault cracks, utility and pipe penetrations, weep holes and air bricks, cornice and roofline openings, gaps around window AC units, and shared walls in attached buildings. Our century-old housing stock has had a long time to develop these, which is why effective exclusion here is detailed, building-specific work — not a tube of foam around the obvious spots. We seal with pest-rated, chew-proof materials (steel and copper mesh, hardware cloth, masonry sealants, door sweeps, and vent guards) matched to each location.

Our process

1. Inspection. We survey the building inside and out and map every gap, crack, and penetration pests can use.

2. Prioritized plan. We identify the highest-risk entry points first and explain the full scope.

3. Sealing. We close the openings with durable, pest-rated materials a rodent cannot chew or force.

4. Pair with treatment. When pests are already present, we remove the population first, then seal — and can fold the seal into a quarterly maintenance check.

Pest-Proofing & Exclusion FAQs

What is pest exclusion, and how is it different from spraying?

Exclusion is the practice of physically sealing the gaps, cracks, and openings pests use to get inside, so they cannot enter in the first place. Spraying kills pests that are already in or on the building; exclusion removes the access itself. It is the difference between mopping up a leak and fixing the pipe — and it is the only approach that produces a lasting result, which is why it is the backbone of professional Integrated Pest Management.

How small a gap can a mouse get through?

A house mouse can squeeze through an opening about the size of a dime — roughly a quarter inch — and rats through a gap the size of a quarter. That is why a building can look sealed and still let rodents in: the gaps that matter are small and easy to miss, around utility penetrations, door sweeps, foundation cracks, and where pipes and wires enter. We hunt those specifically.

Where do pests actually get into NYC buildings?

The usual entry points are remarkably consistent: gaps under and around doors, foundation and sidewalk-vault cracks, utility and pipe penetrations, weep holes and air bricks, cornice and roofline openings, gaps around window AC units, and shared walls in attached buildings. Older NYC housing stock has had a century to develop these openings, which is why exclusion here is detailed, building-specific work.

What materials do you use to seal pests out?

Durable, pest-rated materials matched to the location — rodent-proof steel mesh and hardware cloth, copper mesh, sealants and mortar for masonry, door sweeps and weatherstripping, and vent and weep-hole guards. The key for rodents is materials they cannot chew through; foam alone does not stop a mouse. We choose what will hold up to both the pest and the weather.

Will exclusion get rid of pests I already have?

Exclusion prevents entry, so it is most powerful paired with treatment when an infestation is active — we remove the current population, then seal so it cannot recur. On a pest-free home it is purely preventive. Either way, sealing the building is what makes the result permanent instead of a temporary knockdown.

Is pest-proofing a one-time job or ongoing?

It is largely a one-time investment that keeps paying off, though buildings settle and develop new gaps over time, so periodic re-inspection is wise — especially after renovations or weather damage. Many clients pair an initial exclusion project with a quarterly plan so the seal is checked and maintained as the building ages.
