Bird Mite & Rat Mite Treatment NYC – Expert Identification by an ACE-Certified Entomologist

New York Exterminating provides bird mite and rat mite identification and treatment across NYC for apartments, brownstones, co-ops, and commercial buildings. If you are being bitten by something you cannot see, or you have already been told there is nothing there, here is the most important thing to understand:

Mite problems are solved by identification, not guesswork. Bird mites and rat mites are nearly microscopic, are constantly mistaken for bed bugs, scabies, or fibers, and cannot be resolved by spraying a room. They come from a nearby bird or rodent nest, and until that source is found and removed, the biting continues.

New York Exterminating is led by an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE), credentialed by the Entomological Society of America and licensed in structural and food-establishment pest control. Your sample is examined and identified by a qualified entomologist, not guessed at, the single most important step most exterminators skip.

Send us a photo or a sample and we will identify it. Call +1 (347) 210-4646 or request service online. Open 24/7. Se habla español.

Bird Mites & Rat Mites – Quick Answers

Can you really identify an invisible biting pest?

Yes. Our ACE-certified entomologist collects and examines samples under magnification to confirm exactly what is biting you, or to rule out an infestation entirely.

Will spraying my apartment fix it?

No. Without removing the bird or rodent nest feeding the mites, treatment is temporary. We address the source and the structure.

How fast can you help?

Bird Mites vs. Bed Bugs vs. Scabies vs. Fibers

The reason these cases drag on for months is misidentification. Here is how the real possibilities differ, and why only one of them is solved by an exterminator:

  • Bird or rat mites: nearly invisible, tied to a bird or rodent nest on the building, cause a crawling or pin-prick sensation, often near windows, AC units, or walls. This is a pest-control problem, and our specialty.
  • Bed bugs: visible to the naked eye, hide in mattress seams, leave clustered bites in rows, and are not tied to birds or moisture. A different treatment entirely.
  • Scabies: a human skin condition caused by a burrowing mite, diagnosed and treated by a doctor, not an exterminator. We help you rule it in or out so you are not treating the wrong thing.
  • Fibers or static (no infestation): a meaningful share of cases turn out not to be a pest at all. An honest answer here is just as valuable as finding a real mite.

The only way to know which one you have is identification under magnification. That is the first thing we do, and it determines everything that follows.

Why Bird Mites & Rat Mites Are So Often Misdiagnosed in NYC

NYC is almost designed to produce these cases. Pigeons, sparrows, and starlings nest on window air-conditioners, ledges, vents, and rooflines across the city, and rodents nest inside the walls of older attached homes and apartment buildings. When a host leaves or dies, the mites move indoors. Meanwhile the bites do not look like a textbook insect bite, and a generalist exterminator who cannot identify the mite often declares the apartment clean, while the pigeon nest on the AC unit or the rodent nest in the wall void goes untouched. Correct identification by a trained entomologist breaks that cycle.

What We Identify

Bird Mites (Dermanyssus and Ornithonyssus)

From nests of pigeons, sparrows, and starlings on ledges, windowsills, AC units, vents, and rooflines. When nestlings leave or a bird dies, large numbers migrate indoors seeking a host, producing a crawling or biting sensation worse near the nest wall.

Rat Mites & Mouse Mites (Ornithonyssus bacoti)

From rodent nests inside walls, ceilings, and voids. A rodent problem you never fully resolved can leave mites behind that turn to people for a blood meal. Because the fix is structural, this is squarely within our structural pest license.

Our Identification-First Process

Step 1: Sample Collection & Expert Identification

We start with what almost no one else does, actually identifying the organism. We collect samples and examine them under magnification to confirm the species, or to determine that no infestation is present.

Step 2: Source Investigation

We locate the host nest, bird or rodent, on the exterior, in voids, at AC units, vents, and rooflines, and assess how mites are entering the living space.

Step 3: Source Removal & Treatment

We remove or exclude the nest source and treat the affected areas with targeted methods, eliminating the supply of mites at its origin.

Step 4: Exclusion & Follow-Up

We seal entry points and return to confirm activity has stopped, because lasting relief depends on the host being gone for good.

Handling These Cases Responsibly

Not every invisible-biting case is an active infestation. As a certified entomologist, our responsibility is an accurate answer, confirming a real mite problem and solving it, or honestly ruling one out and pointing you toward the right next step. We will never sell you repeat treatments for a pest that is not there.

Bird Mite & Rat Mite FAQs

Where do bird mites come from in an NYC apartment?

Almost always a bird nest on the building, pigeons, sparrows, or starlings nesting on a window air-conditioner, a ledge, a vent, or the roofline. When the young birds leave or a bird dies, thousands of mites migrate inward through the wall, window frame, or AC unit looking for a host. In NYC, the window-AC pigeon nest is the classic source we trace.

I went to a doctor or dermatologist and they found nothing. Do I really have mites?

Possibly, and this is exactly the situation we are built for. Bird and rat mites are nearly microscopic, intermittent, and not something a clinician is trained to identify. A medical exam ruling out a skin condition does not rule out an environmental mite. We examine a sample under magnification to give you an objective answer either way.

Can you treat the mites without finding the nest?

Not effectively. Surface treatment without removing the bird or rodent nest fueling the mites gives only short-term relief. The nest is the engine; until it is removed and the entry sealed, new mites keep arriving. Finding the source is the core of the job.

Will bird or rat mites spread through my whole building?

They can move along the path the host created, between units that share a wall, a riser, or a roofline nest, which is why we look at the structure, not just your room. In multi-unit buildings we identify the structural source and, where needed, flag it for management so it is resolved at the root.

How long does mite treatment take to work?

Once the nest source is removed and the affected areas are treated, the biting typically stops within days to a couple of weeks as the stranded mites die off. The variable is access to the nest, not the treatment itself.

How much does bird mite or rat mite treatment cost?

It depends on locating and removing the nest source, the structural access involved, and the affected areas. We inspect, confirm the species under magnification, and provide a clear quote before any work begins.
