Why microinjection beats spraying under DOH pressure

In a New York City restaurant, a German cockroach problem is a letter-grade problem. Under NYC Health Code Article 81, you must maintain active, documented pest control, and an inspector looks first for live activity or evidence in the kitchen — almost always in the warm equipment voids. A repellent spray on a monthly cycle scatters roaches deeper into those voids and never reaches the harborage, so the population rebuilds and the 4M violations keep coming. Microinjection works the opposite way: it goes into the harborage. The U.S. EPA recommends an IPM approach over spray-only treatment, and the FDA Food Code expects active, documented pest management.

The method and equipment

The Phase-1 active is a botanically derived pyrethrin in an oil base, combined with the synergists PBO and MGK-264 that block the enzymes roaches use to resist pyrethrins. Because the oil carrier is electrically non-conductive, it can be placed in and around equipment after standard isolation. It is delivered with a compressed-air microinjector — roughly 30 PSI continuous for steady void penetration and short 60 PSI pulses to flush deep harborage. Phase 2 adds a non-repellent residual plus Tekko Trio, a triple-active insect growth regulator (hydroprene, novaluron, pyriproxyfen), so survivors cannot reproduce. • Stove and range motor cavities — the warmest, most protected harborage in the kitchen.
• Refrigerator and walk-in coil compartments and motor housings.
• Dishwasher pump housings and wash-arm voids.
• Reach-in and prep-table motor bases, ice-machine pumps, and utility chases.
• Cracks and crevices behind and beneath fixed equipment a spray wand cannot reach.

Documented result

A casual-dining restaurant in Brighton Beach had thousands of German cockroaches after a previous exterminator’s repellent sprays drove them deeper into walls and equipment. We treated with non-repellent microinjection into all accessible harborage plus a non-repellent residual tank-mixed with the IGR. Activity dropped sharply the first day and stayed low. Cost: about $1,200 plus monitoring — versus the $3,000–$5,000+ a multi-week repeat-visit spray program would typically run.

Yes. The oil-based carrier is non-conductive, applied after standard equipment isolation, and placed into voids and harborage — not across food-contact surfaces.

Why is it better than monthly spraying for a restaurant?

Spraying is repellent and surface-only, so roaches flee deeper into equipment and rebuild. Microinjection reaches the harborage and, with the IGR, shuts down reproduction, so the population collapses instead of relocating.

How fast does it work?

You typically see sharp knockdown the first day; the IGR then prevents the next generation. Most kitchens are reset in a single intensive visit, with monitoring to confirm.

Will it help my DOH letter grade?

It directly targets the 4M cockroach harborage inspectors find, documented to Article 81 standards — though no honest provider can guarantee a grade.
