Trusted extermination services to keep your home, business, and customers pest-free
Millipedes along the baseboard after a rainstorm, ground beetles by the back door, sowbugs in the basement — these are occasional invaders, outdoor pests that wander in with the weather and do not breed inside. That is good news, because it means the fix is sealing the building, not endless indoor spraying. New York Exterminating identifies what you have and stops the influx at the perimeter. The work is led by an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) licensed in structural pest control.
“Occasional invaders” covers a range of perimeter pests: ground beetles, millipedes, centipedes, sowbugs and pillbugs (roly-polies), springtails, and clover mites, among others. They look different, but they share one decisive trait — they live and reproduce outdoors and cannot sustain a population inside your home. The insects you see have drifted in and are typically dying off. This single fact changes the whole strategy: spraying indoors over and over accomplishes little, because the source is the perimeter, not the living room. Control the building’s edge and you control the problem. (If you are seeing one specific pest, we also have focused pages for crickets and earwigs.)
Weather is the trigger. A heavy rain floods their outdoor harborage and drives them to your foundation and inside; a dry spell or a cold snap sends them seeking moisture and shelter. Because they all react to the same conditions, you get a sudden influx over a few days — dozens of millipedes or ground beetles — then it stops. NYC’s mix of older foundations, ground-level and basement units, and landscaped perimeters with mulch and ground cover gives them ample harborage right against the building, which is why exclusion is the durable answer.
1. Identify. We confirm which invaders you have, since the harborage and timing differ slightly by species.
2. Exterior perimeter treatment. We treat the building’s edge — the barrier the invaders must cross.
3. Exclusion. We seal door sweeps, foundation cracks, utility penetrations, and weep holes they exploit.
4. Harborage reduction. We address mulch, leaf litter, ground cover, and moisture staging them against the foundation — and offer a seasonal maintenance program for recurring problems.

Yes — we identify the invaders, find the entry points, and quote before any work.
For recurring seasonal influxes, a maintenance perimeter program keeps the barrier intact; for a one-time surge, a single treatment plus exclusion is often enough.
Usually yes — email a clear photo and we can identify the invader and the likely entry route.
It is a catch-all for pests that live and breed outdoors but wander inside in small numbers, usually triggered by weather. The group includes ground beetles, millipedes, centipedes, sowbugs and pillbugs (roly-polies), springtails, clover mites, and similar. The defining trait is that they do not establish or reproduce indoors — they drifted in from the perimeter and will keep doing so until the building is sealed.
Almost never — and that is the key fact. They cannot sustain a population indoors because the conditions are wrong, so the ones you see came in from outside and are usually dying off. That means the solution is not repeated indoor spraying; it is exclusion and perimeter work that stops the next wave from entering.
Generally no. Most occasional invaders do not bite, sting, spread disease, or damage the structure — centipedes can deliver a minor nip if handled, and that is about the worst of it. They are a nuisance defined by their numbers and timing rather than any real harm. The frustration is seeing them reappear at the same time each year.
Weather drives them. A heavy rain floods their outdoor harborage and pushes them to higher ground (your foundation and then inside); a drought or a sudden cold snap sends them seeking shelter and moisture. Because they all respond to the same trigger, you can get a sudden influx of millipedes or ground beetles over just a few days, then nothing.
By treating the building like a barrier, not by chasing individuals inside. We apply an exterior perimeter treatment, seal the entry points they exploit — door sweeps, foundation cracks, utility penetrations, weep holes — and reduce the harborage against the foundation (mulch, leaf litter, ground cover, and moisture). That combination stops the influx at the source.
Ahead of the seasonal pushes — spring and fall are the heavy windows for most occasional invaders. A timed exterior treatment and exclusion before the weather triggers hit is far more effective than reacting after dozens are already inside. For recurring yearly problems, a maintenance perimeter program keeps the barrier intact.
