Quick answer: A single live cockroach is a 28-point violation — enough to drop a clean NYC kitchen from an A straight to a C in one inspection. New York Exterminating keeps food businesses inspection-ready with documented, ACE-led IPM: we control the pests that cost the most points and keep the records that protect you.

For a NYC restaurant, the letter in the window is the business. The Health Department inspects unannounced at least once a year and scores violations on points — 0–13 is an A, 14–27 is a B, 28 or more is a C — and pest violations are among the highest-scoring of all. You can read the City’s own scoring on the NYC Health Department’s inspection page. New York Exterminating exists to keep that letter an A, with a program built by an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) around the violations that actually move your score.

The math that should keep you up at night

One live roach is 28 points — an automatic C, no matter how spotless the rest of the kitchen is. Evidence of mice (droppings, gnaw marks), live mice, flies at food-prep areas, and conditions conducive to pests all stack points fast. The difference between an A and a C is often a single missed harborage. That’s why reacting after a problem is too late, and why food businesses keep us on a proactive schedule.

How we keep you inspection-ready

  • Target the point-scoring pests. German cockroaches, mice and rats, and flies — at the source, not just the sighting.
  • Find and fix conducive conditions. The moisture, harborage, and gaps an inspector writes up — corrected before they cost you.
  • Scheduled monitoring. Regular visits catch pressure early, when it’s a note instead of a grade drop.
  • Pre-inspection readiness. Fast service before a due inspection, and a walk-through of the spots inspectors check first.

Documentation is your legal protection

Both the DOH and the City distinguish between reactive extermination and a documented IPM program — and a documented program is protection a one-time spray can never provide. We keep your service reports, pest-activity logs, corrective-action records, and product information audit-ready on site, so when the inspector asks “what’s your pest control program?”, you have a professional answer in hand. It’s the backbone of our restaurant and commercial programs.

DOH Letter-Grade FAQs

Which pest violations cost the most points?

Live cockroaches and evidence of mice/rats are among the highest. We build the program around exactly these.

Can you help before a re-inspection?

Yes — we prioritize businesses facing a scheduled or re-inspection and move quickly. See emergency service.

What documentation do you provide?

Service reports, pest-activity logs, corrective-condition findings, and product information — the IPM record that demonstrates an active program.

How often should a restaurant be serviced?

Most NYC food businesses do best on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule given health-code expectations; we’ll recommend the right frequency for your kitchen.

Do you work with restaurant groups?

Yes — single locations and multi-unit groups with consolidated reporting. See commercial pest control.
