Overwintering Pest Control in NYC

If bugs keep showing up on your walls and windows on warm winter days, you are not being re-invaded from outside — they have been living inside your walls since fall. Stink bugs, cluster flies, boxelder bugs, and Asian lady beetles overwinter in the structure and wake on mild days. New York Exterminating manages the indoor emergence and, more importantly, seals them out so it stops happening every year. The work is led by an Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) licensed in structural pest control.

Overwintering invaders — not bed bugs, not roaches

The first thing we do is calm the panic with a correct ID, because people often fear the worst. Overwintering pests appear at windows and on sunny walls in cool months: brown marmorated stink bugs (shield-shaped), cluster flies (sluggish and larger than house flies), boxelder bugs (black with red markings), and Asian lady beetles (orange domes). They do not bite, breed indoors, or harm the building. Bed bugs, by contrast, stay near where you sleep and leave bites; cockroaches hide in kitchens and baths and scatter from light. If your insects gather at windows on warm days and disappear when it turns cold again, they are overwintering invaders — a nuisance, not an infestation of biting pests. We will confirm from a photo at no charge.

Why NYC-area buildings get them

These insects exploit the gaps every building has: siding and cladding seams, gaps around windows and utility lines, attic and soffit vents, and fascia and roofline openings — especially on warm, south- and west-facing walls that catch the afternoon sun. In attached homes and older construction with plenty of small openings, large numbers can tuck into the wall voids in fall and then trickle indoors all winter. Because the entry happens in late summer and fall, that is when the durable fix has to be done.

Our process

1. Identify & reassure. We confirm the species and rule out bed bugs or roaches so you know what you are actually dealing with.

2. Manage the emergence. We help you vacuum and reduce the indoor activity without spraying insects dead inside the walls.

3. Exclusion. We seal the cladding seams, vents, window gaps, and penetrations they use — the step that ends the cycle.

4. Timed fall treatment. A late-summer perimeter treatment of the sunny walls they gather on, before they move in for winter.

When is the best time to seal them out?

Late summer to early fall, before they move into the walls for winter.

Overwintering Pest FAQs

Why are bugs suddenly appearing inside on a warm winter day?

Because they never left — they overwintered. In fall, stink bugs, cluster flies, boxelder bugs, and Asian lady beetles slip into wall voids, attics, and window cavities to wait out the cold. A sunny, mild day fools them into thinking spring has arrived, so they become active and crawl toward the light, ending up on your interior walls and windows. They came from inside the structure, not from outdoors.

Are these bugs dangerous or just a nuisance?

Overwintering pests do not bite, sting, breed indoors, or damage the structure — they are a nuisance, not a threat. Stink bugs release an odor when crushed, cluster flies leave specks on windows, and Asian lady beetles can stain surfaces. The real problem is the sheer numbers and the fact that they keep reappearing all winter from inside the walls.

Are they bed bugs or roaches? I am worried.

Almost certainly not. Overwintering pests — brown marmorated stink bugs (shield-shaped), cluster flies (sluggish, larger than house flies), boxelder bugs (black with red lines), and lady beetles (orange domes) — appear at windows and on sunny walls in cool months. Bed bugs stay near beds and bite; roaches hide in kitchens and bathrooms and flee light. If your bugs gather at windows on warm days, they are overwintering invaders. Send a photo and we will confirm free.

How do you get rid of them once they are inside the walls?

Once they are overwintering in the voids, you cannot spray them out without creating a worse problem (dead insects in the walls attract other pests). The effective approach is to vacuum and manage the indoor emergence now, then do the real fix on the outside — sealing the entry points — before next fall so the next generation cannot get in.

How do I stop them from coming back next year?

Exclusion, done in late summer before they seek shelter. We seal the gaps they use — cladding and siding seams, around windows and utility penetrations, attic and soffit vents, and fascia gaps — and can apply a timed exterior treatment to the sunny walls they congregate on in fall. Sealing the building is what actually ends the yearly cycle.

When should I schedule overwintering pest service?

Two windows. If they are emerging indoors now, we help you manage it and plan the exclusion. The most important work is in late summer to early fall (roughly August through October), before the insects move in for winter — that is when exclusion and a perimeter treatment stop them from ever getting inside.
