Why Manhasset and Great Neck wardrobes get hit hardest

Manhasset is where the clothes are bought. The Americana on Northern Boulevard is one of the few places outside Manhattan with Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli and Hermès under one roof, and the dressing rooms within a few miles of it are stocked accordingly. Manhasset’s ZIP 11030 has a median household income of about $232,000, and Kings Point is one of the fifteen highest New York ZIPs by average income on tax returns. That is a lot of cashmere per square mile, and cashmere is what webbing clothes moth larvae prefer.

The housing stock makes it worse. Plandome, Munsey Park and Great Neck Estates are full of 1920s and 1930s colonials and Tudors with deep built-in closets, cedar-lined storage rooms and third-floor attics where off-season wool sits in garment bags from April to October. Cedar slows adult moths and does nothing to larvae already inside a folded sweater, and a sealed garment bag protects a larva from everything except our heat and cold.

Two patterns we see on this stretch of the North Shore. First, the problem is almost never in the main closet; it is in a secondary closet, a cedar room or a rug under a guest bed, and the main closet is the second generation. Second, the household usually has staff, and the housekeeper has been quietly throwing away damaged sweaters for a season before anyone connects them. Our assessment starts with the question nobody has asked: which pieces have been discarded, and from where?

The program

Nothing leaves your home.
Assessment, processing, treatment and a report, in one visit.

The full program is described hour by hour on the Private Client page. In Manhasset it runs like this.

Before

01

Private assessment, $750

Jorge Bedoya, ACE, inspects every closet, storage room and rug and photographs each garment as clear, at risk or infested. You receive the inventory and a fixed program price. The fee is credited to a program booked within 30 days.

On the day

02

Processed on site

Heat-safe garments go through our chamber in your home with a probe in the core of the load. Cashmere, silk and anything delicate is frozen in our portable freezers. Closets are emptied, HEPA-vacuumed and treated in the structure; rugs are done on both sides.

After

03

Report and monitoring

Everything goes back in its original order. You receive the Private Client Report with findings, inventory, probe and freezer logs. Monitors are read at 30, 60 and 90 days; those visits verify, they do not re-treat.

Forty minutes from Midwood via the Grand Central and the Northern State. We book Manhasset and Great Neck programs Tuesday to Thursday and arrive at 8:00.

Clothes moths in Manhasset: FAQ

Do you cover Kings Point and Great Neck Estates, or just Manhasset?

All of it: Manhasset, Plandome, Plandome Manor, Munsey Park, Flower Hill, Kings Point, Great Neck, Great Neck Estates, Saddle Rock and Lake Success. One-day programs for every one of them.

My housekeeper has been finding holes for months. Is it too late?

No, but it changes the plan. Months of damage usually means two or three generations and a source closet nobody has looked in. The assessment finds the source first; the program then covers every closet, not just the one you noticed.

Can you treat the clothes without taking them out of the house?

Yes. That is the program. Heat-safe garments go through our chamber in your dressing room or garage, delicate pieces are frozen in our portable freezers on site, closets and rugs are treated in place.

Will you work with my house manager instead of me?

Yes, and most Manhasset clients prefer it. The manager receives the vendor packet, books the window, briefs us and gets the report first.

How much does the program cost in Manhasset?

The Wardrobe Assessment is $750, credited to a program booked within 30 days. The Estate Wardrobe Program is $3,000 for one day and up to three closets; the Plus program is $4,500 for the whole house over two days. Prices are fixed at the assessment.
