Old Westbury and Roslyn: the problem is scale

Old Westbury’s ZIP 11568 sits at the Census income cap, and the village still zones most of its land at two acres and up, which is why a typical house here has more closet space than a Manhattan apartment has floor space. Dressing rooms for two adults, children’s closets, a cedar room, guest-room closets that hold the overflow, an attic of stored wool, and six or eight rugs. Roslyn Harbor and East Hills are smaller lots with the same wardrobes.

Moths exploit that scale. An infestation that starts in one stored coat in the cedar room has a dozen rooms to spread into before anyone sees an adult fluttering in the master bath, and by then the rugs have been seeded. The usual moth job, a spray in one closet and a bag of clothes to the cleaner, cannot keep up with a house this size; the three or four closets nobody treated reinfest the one that was.

Old Westbury is also horse country, and tack rooms, saddle pads, wool coolers and show jackets stored in the barn are a source we check on every program here. A wool cooler folded in a trunk since the last show season is the single most reliable larval site we find on properties with horses.

The program

Nothing leaves your home.
Assessment, processing, treatment and a report, in one visit.

The full program is described hour by hour on the Private Client page. In Old Westbury it runs like this.

Before

01

Private assessment, $750

Jorge Bedoya, ACE, inspects every closet, storage room and rug and photographs each garment as clear, at risk or infested. You receive the inventory and a fixed program price. The fee is credited to a program booked within 30 days.

On the day

02

Processed on site

Heat-safe garments go through our chamber in your home with a probe in the core of the load. Cashmere, silk and anything delicate is frozen in our portable freezers. Closets are emptied, HEPA-vacuumed and treated in the structure; rugs are done on both sides.

After

03

Report and monitoring

Everything goes back in its original order. You receive the Private Client Report with findings, inventory, probe and freezer logs. Monitors are read at 30, 60 and 90 days; those visits verify, they do not re-treat.

Fifty minutes from Midwood via the LIE to Exit 39. Old Westbury and Brookville programs are usually booked as the Plus program because of house size; Roslyn and East Hills are usually one day.

Fabric and brand care

Clothes moths in Old Westbury: FAQ

Is a two-acre house in Old Westbury a one-day program?

Usually two. The Estate Wardrobe Program Plus at $4,500 covers every closet, the cedar room, the attic, up to six rugs and upholstered pieces over two days with two technicians. Roslyn, Roslyn Heights and East Hills houses are usually one day.

We have horses. Do you treat the barn?

We inspect the tack room and any stored wool on the property as part of the assessment, because it is so often the source. Treatment of barn textiles is quoted with the program.

Our cedar room is full. Does cedar not work?

Cedar slows adult moths a little and does nothing to larvae already inside folded wool. A full cedar room is one of the first places we look.

Can you work while the house is occupied?

Yes. The chamber and freezers run in a dressing room or garage, and closets are treated empty with the door closed. Most families stay home and never see the process.

Do you serve Brookville and Upper Brookville?

Yes, under the same program and price. Both are North Shore estate villages with the same house scale as Old Westbury.
