Rye and Purchase: waterfront humidity and estate-scale storage

Purchase (10577) ranks second among all New York ZIPs by average adjusted gross income, behind only Mill Neck, and the hamlet is zoned for large lots around the SUNY Purchase and corporate-campus land. Rye (10580) is at the Census income cap and runs from the pre-war houses near the village to the waterfront along Milton Point and Greenhaven. Harrison and Rye Brook fill in between, with the same scale of house.

Rye’s moth problem has a Long Island Sound signature. Waterfront and near-waterfront houses run humid from May to September, and clothes moth larvae develop faster in warm, humid closets than in dry ones. A basement cedar room or a closet on the water side of the house can produce two generations in a summer where an inland closet produces one. We take moisture readings on every Rye assessment, because the humid closet is usually the source closet.

Purchase houses have the Old Westbury pattern instead: dressing rooms for each adult, a dedicated cedar or storage room, guest wings whose closets hold the overflow, and rugs in every room. One treated closet cannot hold against five untreated ones, which is why the program here is nearly always whole-house.

The program

Nothing leaves your home.
Assessment, processing, treatment and a report, in one visit.

The full program is described hour by hour on the Private Client page. In Rye it runs like this.

Before

01

Private assessment, $750

Jorge Bedoya, ACE, inspects every closet, storage room and rug and photographs each garment as clear, at risk or infested. You receive the inventory and a fixed program price. The fee is credited to a program booked within 30 days.

On the day

02

Processed on site

Heat-safe garments go through our chamber in your home with a probe in the core of the load. Cashmere, silk and anything delicate is frozen in our portable freezers. Closets are emptied, HEPA-vacuumed and treated in the structure; rugs are done on both sides.

After

03

Report and monitoring

Everything goes back in its original order. You receive the Private Client Report with findings, inventory, probe and freezer logs. Monitors are read at 30, 60 and 90 days; those visits verify, they do not re-treat.

Fifty-five minutes from Midwood via the Hutchinson River Parkway and I-287. Rye and Rye Brook programs are usually one day; Purchase estates are usually the two-day Plus program.

Fabric and brand care

What we rate most often in Rye and Purchase houses:

Garment Why moths want it Rating How we handle it
Cashmere and fine wool stored in a humid basement or water-side closet Humidity speeds larval development; this is usually the source Freeze Freeze on site; closet dehumidified and treated; storage moved in the report.
Summer-stored overcoats and camel hair Bagged from April to October, untouched Freeze Freeze on site; bags replaced with breathable cotton covers.
Wool rugs in guest wings and lower floors Rooms used rarely; larvae feed undisturbed Heat, probed Both sides inspected; treated in place, or frozen by size.
Golf and club wool: sweaters, blazers, vests Worn weekly in season, stored the rest of the year Heat Chamber load with a probe; fused collars checked first.

Brand names describe fibre, construction and care only. New York Exterminating is not affiliated with any maker named. The full index is on the Private Client program page and in the Complete Guide.

Clothes moths in Rye: FAQ

Does being near the water change the treatment?

It changes where we look. Humid closets on the Sound side of a house and in basements breed larvae faster, so the assessment includes moisture readings and the report includes where to store wool instead.

Are Purchase estates a one-day program?

Usually two. The Estate Wardrobe Program Plus at $4,500 covers every closet, storage room and guest wing, up to six rugs and upholstered pieces over two days. Rye, Harrison and Rye Brook houses are usually one day.

Do you treat Harrison and Port Chester at the same price?

Yes. Harrison, Rye Brook and the estate section of Port Chester are the same program and the same pricing as Rye and Purchase.

Can the house manager handle everything?

Yes. The manager gets the vendor packet, books the window, briefs us on the house and receives the report first. Many Purchase owners never meet us.

What if we see a moth a few weeks later?

One adult in the first weeks is expected; it was a pupa when we arrived and the monitors are there for it. We read monitors at 30, 60 and 90 days, and any repeat service within six months is 50% of the original price.
