Three different insects get called “crickets,” and telling them apart is the whole diagnosis. The camel cricket (cave or “spider” cricket) is the one in your basement: humpbacked, pale brown, wingless, silent, and it jumps toward you when startled — which is exactly why people think they are seeing a huge spider. It wants damp, dark, below-grade space. The field cricket and house cricket are dark, winged, and the males chirp; they are drawn to exterior light and warmth and push indoors in fall. If it is silent and hopping in the cellar, it is a camel cricket; if it is chirping and you cannot find it, it is a field or house cricket. The fixes differ, so we confirm which before treating.

NYC’s below-grade housing is camel-cricket country. Brownstone and row-house cellars, basement apartments, and the damp utility and storage levels of older buildings give them precisely the cool, humid, dark harborage they seek — and the gaps around old foundations, hatch doors, and utility penetrations let them in. In late summer and fall, field and house crickets add a second wave, slipping in through the same entry points as the temperature drops. Both problems start at the foundation line, which is where we focus.
1. Identify. We confirm the species (and rule out the spider mix-up), which tells us moisture-driven vs. light-driven.
2. Harborage treatment. We treat the damp basement, crawlspace, and perimeter zones where they cluster, not just where you saw one.

Almost certainly a camel cricket (also called a cave or spider cricket). It is humpbacked, light brown, has no wings, does not chirp, and jumps erratically toward you when startled — which is why people mistake it for a large spider. True spiders have eight legs and build webs; camel crickets have six legs, long antennae, and oversized hind legs for jumping. If it is silent, in your basement, and hops, it is a camel cricket.
Behavior and sound. House and field crickets are dark, winged, and the males chirp — the noise that keeps you up at night. Camel crickets are pale, wingless, and silent, and they cluster in damp, dark below-grade spaces. The chirpers are usually drawn in by light and warmth; the basement jumpers are drawn in by moisture. They call for different fixes, so identifying which you have matters.
Moisture, harborage, and access. Camel crickets want damp basements, crawlspaces, and cellars; house and field crickets are attracted to exterior lighting and slip in through gaps in fall as it cools. Mulch, leaf litter, woodpiles, and clutter against the foundation give them staging areas right next to your entry points.
By finding and treating the harborage, not chasing the sound. A single male field or house cricket can be remarkably loud and hard to locate by ear. We inspect the entry points and harborage they came from, treat those zones, and seal the gaps, which removes the source rather than the one cricket you can hear.
Mostly a nuisance, but not entirely. Camel crickets in large numbers can damage fabrics, paper, and stored items in basements, and heavy populations signal a moisture problem worth addressing. Field and house crickets can nibble fabrics and the chirping disrupts sleep. The bigger issue is usually what the infestation says about damp, accessible below-grade space.
Exclusion and moisture control. We seal the foundation gaps, door sweeps, and utility penetrations they use, reduce harborage against the building, and address the dampness that draws camel crickets. For seasonal field-cricket pushes we treat the perimeter at the right time of year so they do not migrate in.
