Trusted extermination services to keep your home, business, and customers pest-free
Deformed German cockroaches — twisted wings, half-formed adult bodies — are “adultoids”: roaches whose development was disrupted by an insect growth regulator (IGR). They emerge sterile and cannot reproduce, so seeing them is proof the treatment is shutting down the colony’s next generation. NYE uses adultoid presence as field confirmation that a job is working; callback rate under 1%.
If you start seeing oddly shaped German cockroaches after a treatment — twisted or stubby wings, half-formed adult features, roaches that look “in between” a nymph and an adult — you’re likely looking at adultoids. These are roaches whose development was disrupted by an insect growth regulator (IGR). Instead of molting cleanly into reproducing adults, they emerge deformed and, critically, sterile.
An adultoid is direct, visible proof that the treatment is reaching the population’s reproduction. IGRs mimic the hormones that control molting; when developing nymphs absorb them, they cannot complete the transition to a fertile adult. A roach that cannot reproduce cannot rebuild the colony — so a wave of deformed roaches signals the population is collapsing rather than coming back.
Don’t panic, and don’t reach for a repellent spray — that can undo the progress by scattering survivors. Leave the treated zones intact, keep monitors in place, and let the IGR finish working through the hatch. NYE checks adultoid presence on follow-up to confirm the decline; in most homes the visible activity is gone within a couple of weeks and the job is resolved in a single visit.
Most resolved in a single visit
Because the non-repellents don’t spook the roaches, they keep moving through treated zones and carry it back to the colony — our callback rate is under 1%.
Expert note — Jorge Bedoya, ACE
When I spot adultoids on a follow-up, I know the IGR landed where it needed to. A sterile, malformed roach is a roach that won’t rebuild the population. I’d rather see a wave of adultoids than a “clean” kitchen that’s really just survivors hiding — the adultoids tell me the reproduction is broken.

It’s usually a good sign. Misshapen roaches (adultoids) are the result of an insect growth regulator disrupting development. They can’t reproduce, which means the colony’s next generation is being shut down.
No. A repellent spray can scatter survivors and interfere with the IGR’s work. Leave treated zones and monitors in place and let the growth regulator finish.
