Droppings are often the first sign of German cockroaches because the insects themselves hide by day. What German cockroach droppings look like
- Dry droppings: tiny dark specks, roughly the size of ground pepper or coffee grounds, often clustered in corners.
- Smears and streaks: where humidity is high, droppings show as brown or black smears and dots on vertical surfaces and around hinges.
- Texture: granular, not a smooth pellet, and they smear brown when wiped with a damp paper towel.
- Companion signs: shed skins, empty egg cases (see German cockroach eggs), and a musty, oily odor in heavier infestations.

Where to look for German cockroach droppings in an NYC apartment
- Cabinet corners, hinges, shelf undersides and the backs of drawers
- Drawer slides, especially near the stove and sink
- Under the sink and around pipe penetrations in the wall
- Refrigerator gasket, motor housing and the pan underneath
- Dishwasher edges and bathroom vanity seams
- Cardboard, paper bags and stored packaging

What the amount of droppings tells you
Small numbers of specks in one cabinet suggest a young or localized population. Droppings in several rooms, thick accumulations in corners, and smears near hinges point to an established colony. Amount is only a clue: the reliable read is a mix of droppings, glue-monitor counts, and the ratio of nymphs to adults, which is why our first visit includes a day-one flush-out that shows how heavy the population is. How to clean cockroach droppings safely
- Wear gloves, and consider a mask if you are sensitive to dust: cockroach allergens can trigger asthma.
- Do not dry sweep. Wipe with a damp cloth or use a HEPA vacuum so particles do not go airborne.
- Wash the surface with soap and water, then a household disinfectant.
- Clean after treatment, not before, so you can tell whether new droppings appear. Fresh specks in a cleaned spot mean roaches are still using it.
