Clothes Moth Treatment in Rumson, Deal, Allenhurst, Spring Lake, Mantoloking and the Jersey Shore
A shore house closed from September to Mayis a moth incubator with an ocean view.
Rumson, Deal, Allenhurst, Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Mantoloking houses are assessed by an Associate Certified Entomologist and processed on site with heat, freezing, steam and HEPA vacuuming, timed to the closing or the opening. Nothing leaves the property. Programs from $3,000, seventy-five to ninety minutes from our Brooklyn office.
Rumson to Mantoloking: the year-round estate, the summer house, and the seven months in between
Deal (07723) closed 2025 at a $3.55 million median sale price, second in New Jersey, with Allenhurst (07711) at $2.15 million and Rumson (07760) at $1.95 million; Mantoloking ranks in the top forty ZIPs nationally by per-capita income, and Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Bay Head are the same houses with fewer sales. There are two kinds. Rumson, Fair Haven, Colts Neck and Holmdel are year-round estates on the Navesink and the Shrewsbury: shingle and colonial houses on acreage, a boathouse, a barn, a wine cellar, and a wardrobe that commutes to Wall Street on the Seastreak ferry. Deal, Allenhurst, Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Mantoloking are summer houses: large, formal, fully furnished, and closed from Labor Day to Memorial Day with a closet of wool left inside them.
A closed shore house is the ideal habitat for a webbing clothes moth: dark, undisturbed, heated low, salt-damp, with seven months for a larva to finish its development inside a sweater nobody will touch until June. The owner opens the house, finds the holes, and takes the moths back to Brooklyn or Manhattan in September in the duffel. We solve the same cycle in the Hamptons, and the answer is the same: a closing program in September or October, after the summer wardrobe is stored and before the house is shut, or an opening program in April or May before the family arrives.
Rumson and the Navesink estates have the year-round version of the problem: boathouse lockers, sailing wool and foul-weather liners that stay damp from October to May, a barn or tack room, and the walk-up attic where every wool blanket and winter coat goes in April. When the assessment finds activity in either kind of house, we treat the city residence under the same report within two weeks, and in New York the whole program, including any structural work, is performed by New York Exterminating under its own license.
Nothing leaves your home.
Assessment, processing, monitoring and a report, in one visit.
The full program is described hour by hour on the Private Client page, and the way it runs in New Jersey on the New Jersey page. Here it runs like this.
Private assessment, $750
Jorge Bedoya, ACE, inspects every closet, storage room, barn and rug and photographs each garment as clear, at risk or infested, rated against our Fabric and Brand Care Index. You receive the inventory and a fixed program price. The fee is credited to a program booked within 30 days.
Processed on site
Heat-safe garments go through our chamber in your home with a probe in the core of the load. Cashmere, silk and anything delicate is frozen in our portable freezers. Closets are emptied, steamed and HEPA-vacuumed; rugs are done on both sides. Everything goes back in its photographed order.
Report and monitoring
You receive the Private Client Report with findings, inventory, probe and freezer logs, and the New Jersey partner’s documentation where a product was applied to the structure. Monitors are read at 30, 60 and 90 days; those visits verify, they do not re-treat.

Seventy-five minutes from Midwood to Rumson, Fair Haven, Colts Neck and Holmdel via the Verrazzano, the Outerbridge and the Parkway; eighty to ninety to Deal, Allenhurst, Spring Lake and Sea Girt; about an hour and three quarters to Mantoloking and Bay Head. Year-round estates are one-day programs, or the Plus program when there is a barn and boathouse. Summer houses are booked to the calendar: closing in September and October, opening in April and May, and two neighboring houses in the same week each take a one-day $3,000 program. Book twelve days ahead.
What we expect to rate most often on the Shore:
| Garment | Why moths want it | Rating | How we handle it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cashmere and fine knits left in a closed house over winter | Seven undisturbed months in a low-heat, salt-damp house | Freeze | Freeze on site before closing; sealed in archival bags with breathable covers for the winter. |
| Sailing wool, blazers, foul-weather liners, boathouse lockers | Damp from October to May, opened in June | Heat, probed | Chamber load; lockers and the boathouse closet steamed and vacuumed. |
| Formal eveningwear and silk left in the summer house | Protein fibres, often beaded, stored where the party was | Freeze | Frozen flat between tissue; beaded pieces documented and referred to a conservator. |
| Wool blankets, throws and rugs in rooms closed for the season | Larvae feed undisturbed under furniture | Heat, probed | Chamber with a probe inside the fold; rugs inspected on both sides, treated in place or frozen by size. |
| Summer linen, cotton and the children’s synthetics | Not moth food; a hole in them points at the wool nearby | Heat | Routine chamber load. We ask what wool shares the closet. |

“I do the assessment myself because the assessment is the job. Anyone can run a heat chamber. Knowing which jacket has horsehair canvas inside it, which coat will delaminate at 120 degrees and which rug is the actual source is what you are paying for. If I would not put a garment of my own through a step, it does not go through that step.”

Clothes moths in Rumson & the Shore: FAQ
When should a summer house be treated, closing or opening?
Closing, if you have to choose. Treating in September or October, after the summer wardrobe is stored and before the house is shut, stops larvae from feeding all winter. An opening program in April or May catches what a closed house produced and clears it before the family arrives.
Can the caretaker or house manager open the house for you?
Yes, and that is how seasonal programs usually run. The caretaker opens, our two technicians work the day, closets are reset to their photographed order, and the report goes to the owner and the manager.
Is New York Exterminating licensed in New Jersey?
Our pesticide business registration and applicator certification are in New York State. On the Shore we perform the assessment, on-site heat, freezing, steam and HEPA processing, monitoring and the report, none of which is a pesticide application. If the structure needs a product applied, a New Jersey-licensed company performs it under its own license, scheduled by us and documented in your report. See our New Jersey page.
Can you treat our Brooklyn or Manhattan residence at the same time?
Yes, under the same program and report, within the same two weeks, so garments stop carrying larvae between the city and the shore. In New York the whole program, including any structural work, is performed by us.
What if a piece is beyond what you can process on site?
It goes to the right specialist, and we make the call: a furrier’s cold vault for furs and shearling, a textile conservator for beaded and couture pieces, a rug restorer for antique and silk rugs. Each hand-off is recorded in the report.
