Clothes Moth Treatment in Darien, New Canaan and Rowayton, Connecticut
The highest incomes in Connecticut, and closets that were designed in 1952.
Darien, New Canaan and Rowayton wardrobes are assessed by an Associate Certified Entomologist and processed on site with heat, freezing, steam and HEPA vacuuming. Nothing leaves the property. Programs from $3,000, about an hour from our Brooklyn office.
Darien, New Canaan and Rowayton: waterfront wool, mid-century built-ins and the Metro-North duffel
Darien has the highest mean household income of any town in Connecticut, around $424,000, and a 2025 median sale price of $2.36 million in 06820; New Canaan (06840) and Rowayton (06853) both clear $2 million. Tokeneke, Noroton Bay, Long Neck Point and the Wee Burn side of town are shingle and colonial houses on the Sound with the Sound-side problem: a boathouse, a beach-club locker and a mudroom full of damp wool from October to May. Rowayton and Wilson Point are the same on a smaller lot, with the closet off the back stairs that nobody has opened since the renovation.
New Canaan is a different house. The Harvard Five built the town’s modernist legacy here, and the flat-roofed glass-walled houses of the 1950s and the colonials that filled in around them share a construction that favours moths: wool wall-to-wall carpet laid over radiant slabs, floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobes with no air gap behind them, and cedar-lined storage walls that lost their oil fifty years ago. Carpet edges under a built-in are the most common larval site in houses of this era, and no wardrobe treatment on its own reaches them. The assessment lifts the carpet at the tack strip where it can.
Both towns commute. The wardrobe rides Metro-North from Darien or New Canaan to Grand Central and back, and a program that treats the country closet and ignores the apartment on the Upper East Side is half a program. When the assessment finds activity we treat the city residence under the same report within two weeks, and in New York the whole program, including any structural work, is performed by New York Exterminating under its own license.
Nothing leaves your home.
Assessment, processing, monitoring and a report, in one visit.
The full program is described hour by hour on the Private Client page, and the way it runs in Connecticut on the Fairfield County page. Here it runs like this.
Private assessment, $750
Jorge Bedoya, ACE, inspects every closet, storage room, barn and rug and photographs each garment as clear, at risk or infested, rated against our Fabric and Brand Care Index. You receive the inventory and a fixed program price. The fee is credited to a program booked within 30 days.
Processed on site
Heat-safe garments go through our chamber in your home with a probe in the core of the load. Cashmere, silk and anything delicate is frozen in our portable freezers. Closets are emptied, steamed and HEPA-vacuumed; rugs are done on both sides. Everything goes back in its photographed order.
Report and monitoring
You receive the Private Client Report with findings, inventory, probe and freezer logs, and the Connecticut partner’s documentation where a product was applied to the structure. Monitors are read at 30, 60 and 90 days; those visits verify, they do not re-treat.

About an hour from Midwood via I-95 to exits 10 to 13, or the Merritt to exit 37 for New Canaan. Darien, New Canaan and Rowayton programs are one day; houses with a full attic and a wool-carpeted lower level are sometimes the two-day Plus program. Booked Tuesday to Thursday.
What we expect to rate most often in Darien and New Canaan houses:
| Garment | Why moths want it | Rating | How we handle it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wool wall-to-wall carpet in 1950s and 1960s houses | Edges under built-ins and baseboards hide larvae for years | Treated in place | Lifted at the tack strip where possible, HEPA-vacuumed and steamed; the structure step, if needed, by the Connecticut partner. |
| Cashmere and camel coats that ride Metro-North | Worn daily, soiled at the collar, hung in two closets | Freeze | Frozen on site; the city closet is checked under the same report. |
| Beach-club and sailing wool: blazers, sweaters, liners | Damp lockers that open in June | Heat, probed | Chamber load; lockers and the boathouse closet steamed and vacuumed. |
| Mid-century upholstery: wool and mohair on the original frames | Horsehair padding and wool face are both food | Treated in place | Seams and undersides inspected; treated where it stands and monitored. |
| Hand-knotted and Moroccan rugs on the slab | Deep pile over a warm floor, never lifted | Case by case | Both sides inspected; steamed and vacuumed in place, or frozen by size. Antique and silk rugs to your restorer. |

“I do the assessment myself because the assessment is the job. Anyone can run a heat chamber. Knowing which jacket has horsehair canvas inside it, which coat will delaminate at 120 degrees and which rug is the actual source is what you are paying for. If I would not put a garment of my own through a step, it does not go through that step.”

Clothes moths in Darien & New Canaan: FAQ
Why does the era of the house matter?
Because the construction decides where larvae live. A 1950s New Canaan house with wool carpet over a radiant slab and built-in wardrobes hides them at the carpet edge and behind the built-ins; a 1920s Tokeneke colonial hides them in the cedar closet and the attic knee-wall. The assessment is written for the house you have, not a generic checklist.
Is New York Exterminating licensed in Connecticut?
Our pesticide business registration and applicator certification are in New York State. In Darien and New Canaan we perform the assessment, on-site heat, freezing, steam and HEPA processing, monitoring and the report, none of which is a pesticide application. If the structure needs a product applied, a Connecticut-registered company performs it under its own registration, scheduled by us and documented in your report. See our Fairfield County page.
Can you treat our Manhattan apartment at the same time?
Yes, under the same program and report, within the same two weeks.
How is the program priced?
A one-day Estate Wardrobe Program at $3,000 covers up to three closets, about 200 garments and two rugs. The two-day Plus program at $4,500 covers every closet, attic and lower level, up to six rugs. The price is fixed at the $750 assessment, which is credited to a program booked within 30 days.
What if a piece is beyond what you can process on site?
It goes to the right specialist, and we make the call: a furrier’s cold vault for furs and shearling, a textile conservator for couture and needlepoint, a rug restorer for antique and silk rugs. Each hand-off is recorded in the report.
