Quick answer: The vast majority of spiders in NYC homes are harmless — the ones you’ll usually see are common house spiders, cellar spiders (“daddy long-legs”), and occasional wolf spiders. New York City has no established population of dangerous spiders: black widows are very rare here, and brown recluses are not established in New York. Spiders are actually beneficial (they eat other pests), but lots of them can mean you have another insect problem feeding them.
Common spiders in NYC homes
- Common house spider: small, brownish, builds tangled cobwebs in corners, basements, and closets. Harmless.
- Cellar spider (daddy long-legs): very thin legs, delicate webs in basements and ceilings. Harmless.
- Wolf spider: larger, hairy, fast-moving ground hunter that doesn’t build a web — startling but not dangerous; it wanders in from outside.
- Orb-weavers: build classic round webs outdoors around windows, porches, and lights.
Are any NYC spiders dangerous?
Realistically, no — not in the way people fear. Black widows exist in the region but are rare and shy, found in undisturbed outdoor spots (woodpiles, sheds), not typical apartments. Brown recluses are not established in New York — most “recluse bite” reports here turn out to be something else (skin infections or other insect bites). The everyday spiders in your home are not a medical threat.
Why do I have spiders?
Spiders go where the food is — other insects. A lot of spiders often signals flies, gnats, roaches, or other prey in the home, plus easy entry points and clutter. Reduce the insects and seal gaps, and the spiders tend to follow. They also wander in through gaps around windows, doors, and the foundation, especially in fall.
When to worry — and what to do
For most homes, the occasional spider is harmless and even helpful. Consider control when you see persistent webbing, lots of spiders (a sign of an underlying insect problem), or egg sacs, or if anyone has a strong phobia. Treatment focuses on the prey insects + exclusion, not just the spiders.

Spiders in NYC — FAQ
Are there dangerous spiders in New York City?
Practically, no. Black widows are rare and outdoor-dwelling, and brown recluses aren’t established in NY. The common household spiders here are harmless.
Why do I suddenly have a lot of spiders?
Usually because there are other insects for them to eat, plus entry points and clutter. Controlling the prey insects reduces the spiders.
Are house spiders good to have?
In small numbers, yes — they prey on other pests. Many people still prefer to keep them out, which comes down to exclusion and reducing their food supply.
Do common NYC spiders bite?
The everyday house and cellar spiders rarely bite and aren’t a medical concern. Most suspected “spider bites” are actually other skin issues.
